Early Years Reading
FS1 and FS2:
A systematic approach to phonics begins with our youngest of children in FS1, where daily, quality phonics is taught using the Letters and Sounds Programme. Phase one allows the pupils to develop an awareness of the sounds they hear around them. We ensure that all seven aspects of phase one are secure before teaching initial phonemes in phase two.
By the end of FS2, pupils should be able to:
Read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.
As your children learn the sounds in school, they are sent home for you to practise with them.
Developing Independent Readers:
As well as taught phonics sessions, the pupils are taught reading skills through shared read sessions, where they learn to handle books with care, listen to adults read and develop a love for reading. To develop independent readers, the pupils have the opportunity to access quality texts in an author-themed reading area as well a vocabulary-rich environment linked to all areas of learning. In addition, they are taught to use reading tools to support their reading. These strategies are transitioned into KS1.
